Toshiba America Information Systems and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary worldwide recall Thursday of41,000 T-series notebook computers, saying that they “can overheat at the notebook’s plug-in to the AC adapter, posing a burn hazard to consumers.”

Ford recalls 575K Windstar vans
Ford says it is recalling 575,000 older model Windstar vans in the United States and Canada over concerns that the rear axles can corrode and potentially break.
The recall covers vehicles in the model years 1998 to 2003 sold in states where the heavy use of road salt can cause more corrosion. That includes Canada, New England, the Mid-Atlantic states and the Great Lakes region.
Toyota recalls 1.1M Corolla, Matrix cars
Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday that it would recall about 1.13 million Corolla and Matrix cars in the United States due to defective electronic control units that could cause the vehicles to stall.
Toyota said it had unconfirmed reports of three accidents and one minor injury in connection with problems with the units on vehicles from the 2005 through 2008 model years. It will replace the units. Get the full story »
U.S. intensifies investigation into Corolla stalling
The U.S. government has beefed up its investigation into Toyota’s Corolla and Matrix vehicles because of a possible engine defect that might cause them to stall. The investigation into the 2005, 2006 and 2007 model year Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars in the U.S. began Aug. 18, NHTSA said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement that it was raising its preliminary evaluation to a more serious scrutiny called an engineering analysis to look into the problems that could cause the engine to stall, not start or to shift gear harshly. Get the full story »

FDA chief says egg recall shows more power needed
Food and Drug Administration chief Margaret Hamburg said Monday her agency is limited by law to a mostly reactive stance on food safety and argued that it needs a more “preventive approach.”
Giving a series of network interviews in the wake of the egg and salmonella breakout, Hamburg said the FDA is taking the issue “very, very seriously.” At the same time, she said Congress should pass pending legislation that would provide her agency with greater enforcement power, including new authority over imported food.
How to prevent illness after egg recall
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued tips for consumers worried about the recall of 228 million eggs linked to an outbreak of salmonella poisoning.
Authorities say eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, were linked to illnesses in Colorado, California and Minnesota. The CDC said about 200 cases of the strain of salmonella linked to the eggs were reported weekly in June and July, four times the usual number. Get the full story »

U.S. probe limits Toyota woes to gas pedals
A government investigation into runaway Toyotas has found no new safety defects beyond problems with accelerator pedals that explain reports of sudden acceleration in the vehicles, according to preliminary findings released Tuesday.

428,000 Hondas recalled; may roll in park

Honda Motor Co. said Monday it was recalling more than 428,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada because of a defect that could cause the cars to roll away if they are parked incorrectly.

96,000 Fisher-Price Campsites recalled
Fisher-Price, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada Thursday announced a voluntary recall of approximately 96,000 Little People Play-n-Go Campsites in the U.S. (14,000 in Canada) because of a choking hazard, according to an Aug. 5 CPSC press release.
The recalled seven-piece plastic play set contains a character named Sonya Lee, who can break at her waist and expose small parts that could pose a choking hazard to children.
No injuries have been reported, but Fisher-Price, a division of Mattel based in East Aurora, N.Y., said it has received eight reports of the Sonya Lee figure breaking.
