Bloomberg News | BMW, the world’s biggest maker of luxury cars, said it’s recalling almost 350,800 BMW-brand and Rolls-Royce models worldwide to repair a power-brake system fault.
The voluntary recall involves fixing brake-pressure pumps on 345,000 BMW 5-, 6- and 7-Series models and 5,800 Rolls-Royce cars built from 2002 until 2010, Frank Strebe, a BMW spokesman, said today in a phone interview from the Paris Motor Show. The new version of the 5-Series sedan isn’t affected, he said.
The fault was detected when drivers complained that they needed to push harder on the brake pedal on cars with high mileage, Strebe said. The Munich-based carmaker is telling customers to bring in their vehicles as a “pro-active” measure, and that the fault poses no safety issue, he said, adding that he doesn’t have an estimate of the cost to BMW. Mattel Inc.’s Fisher-Price subsidiary is recalling almost 11 million toys, including tricycles, after reports of children being cut or choking, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said today.
The recall is the largest for toys since Congress passed a law two years ago beefing up the product-safety regulator’s powers. Mattel and Fisher-Price were fined $2.3 million in June 2009 for toys violating federal lead-paint laws, at the time the largest civil fine in CPSC history. Get the full story »

Siemens AG has recalled about 2.2 million circuit breakers that could cause fires, the company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The electronics company recalled Siemens and Murray 15- through 50-amp single- and double-pole circuit breakers, load centers and meter combos. The circuit breakers have date codes of 0610 or 0710, and the load centers and meter combos have date codes from June through Augugust 2010. Bentley Motors is recalling hundreds of cars with faulty hood ornaments that pose a potential hazard to pedestrians, said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall affects 596 vehicles from the British automaker, of the Arnage, Brooklands and Azure models from 2007-2009.
The problem stems from the “Flying B“ hood ornament, a winged B that is supposed to retract upon impact.

Abbott Laboratories Inc. said it is recalling millions of containers of its top-selling Similac powdered infant formulas after beetles were found in the products and in a Michigan plant where they are made.
Abbott said Wednesday the voluntary recall follows reports by two consumers of contamination and its inspection of an area of the plant in Sturgis, Michigan, where beetles or their larvae were found. Ferrari is recalling its new 458 Italia model after several vehicles were reported to have burst into flames.
A Ferrari spokesperson told CNNMoney.com has that the supercar is being recalled to modify the wheelhouse assembly.
“In rare instances the heat shield could become deformed, bringing it too close to the exhaust system and igniting,” a Ferrari spokesperson said.
