BMW recalls 1-Series over potential fire hazard

From Bloomberg News: BMW is recalling 38,000 1-Series cars to replace the retractors for the front seat belts. A flaw in the parts in 2008 to 2011 models could cause the retractors to ignite.

VW recalls 16,000 Chrysler-made minivans

Associated Press | Volkswagen AG is recalling nearly 16,000
Routan minivans to address fire concerns involving latches on the
sliding doors.

The German automaker says the recall affects 2009 minivans, which are
developed with Chrysler LLC and built at Chrysler’s Windsor, Ontario,
plant.

McDonald’s refunding $3 per ‘Shrek’ glass

From the New York Times | McDonald’s Corp. is offering $3 refunds to customers who bought “Shrek” drinking glasses, the promotional items recalled last week because they’re tainted with cadmium.

Starting today, customers can fill out a refund slip and return the glassware to any McDonald’s restaurant, the Oak Brook-based company said. The glasses sold for $1.99 with a food purchase and $2.49 without.

GM recalls 1.5 million vehicles on fire risk

Reuters | General Motors Co. announced a recall of about 1.5 million trucks, crossovers and cars from model years 2006-2009 on Tuesday, because the unit that heats the windshield washer fluid could catch fire.

Jeff Boyer, GM director for safety, said the supplier who made the module that heats the washer fluid has stopped manufacturing, leaving no chance to design an improved unit.

Chrysler to recall about 600,000 Jeeps, minivans

Associated Press | Chrysler is recalling almost 600,000 minivans and Jeep Wranglers in the
United States and another 100,000 elsewhere because of brake or wiring
problems that could create safety issues, the company and federal
regulators said Monday.

Chrysler said it is recalling 288,968 Jeep Wranglers from the 2006
through 2010 model years due to a potential brake fluid leak.

Dodge recalls 35,000 Calibers over gas pedals

Associated Press | Chrysler is recalling nearly 35,000 Dodge
Calibers in the United States and around the globe to fix a potential
problem with sticky gas pedals, the same issue that has affected
millions of Toyotas.

Chrysler says it will recall about 25,000 Calibers in the U.S. from the
2007 model year and a limited number of 2007 Jeep Compass SUVs to
inspect those built between March and May of 2006.

McDonald’s recalls 12M tainted ‘Shrek’ glasses

McDonald’s Corp. has recalled 12 million “Shrek”-themed drinking glasses
in the United States after a federal agency warned consumers to stop
using them because they contain the toxic metal cadmium.

Cadmium
was found in the painted design of the movie characters on the
glassware, which McDonald’s outlets sold for about $2 each, according
to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

1.7M Maytag dishwashers recalled for fire risk

ct-biz-dishwashers-june3web.jpgBy Kristin Samuelson | The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Maytag Corp. on Thursday announced a recall of approximately 1.7 million Maytag dishwashers because they pose a fire risk, according to a CPSC press release.

“An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a serious fire hazard,” the press release said.

No injuries have been reported, but Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures, which resulted in fires and dishwasher damage. One kitchen fire resulted in extensive damage.

FDA: J&J knew about problems year before recall

products, according to congressional investigators.

Wal-Mart GE coffee maker recalled for fire risk

makers sold at Walmart are being recalled after dozens of reports of
overheating, smoking, burning and fires.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall
Thursday, said Walmart has received 83 complaints about the GE-branded
coffee maker, including three reports of minor burns to consumers’
bodies.

The reports of property damage include a significant kitchen fire and damage to countertops, cabinets and a wall, said the CPSC.

Toyota recalls Lexus cars for steering problem

Associated Press | Toyota said Wednesday it will recall 4,500
Lexus vehicles in Japan to fix a computerized steering problem, with
another 7,000 vehicles overseas also likely affected.

The world’s biggest automaker has received 12 complaints about the
problem within Japan, but knows of no accidents that it has caused
worldwide, according to spokesman Paul Nolasco.

44,000 security blankets sold at Target recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Rashti & Rashti on
Tuesday announced a voluntary recall of approximately 44,000 pink
giraffe security blankets sold exclusively at Target stores because they
pose a choking hazard, according to a May 18 CPSC press release.

“The balls on top of the giraffe’s horns can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children,” according to the CPSC.

No injuries have been reported, but consumers are advised to immediately take the recalled blankets away from children and contact the blanket importer, Rashti & Rashti, for a full refund.

Toyota pays $16.4M fine to U.S.

Associated Press | Toyota has paid a record $16.4 million fine
for a slow response to its accelerator pedal recall. A Transportation
Department official says the Japanese automaker paid the fine on
Tuesday. The company agreed to the fine on April 19 and had 30 days to
pay it. The official was not authorized to speak publicly before an
announcement was made.
