After iPhone 4 debut, older iPhones flood market
From Bloomberg | Consumers are selling old iPhones on eBay and other sites after Apple’s record-setting debut of the iPhone 4. Gazelle.com, a site that buys electronics from consumers, purchased 20,000 used iPhones in the two weeks after Apple and AT&T Inc. began taking preorders for the iPhone 4. That compares with 350 in a typical two-week period.

Apple Inc. said Friday its formula to calculate signal strength is “totally wrong,” and that it will start using a new formula by AT&T to calculate how many bars to display to represent signal strength.
The announcement comes as customers continue to complain of a significant loss in signal when holding the iPhone G4 in a certain way that seems to interfere with the phone’s antenna. Unlike previous iPhones, the new phone’s antenna is a steel frame that wraps around the device. Get the full story »

Motorola Inc. said its spun-off mobile devices and home company will be called Motorola Mobility, with the remaining business being named Motorola Solutions Inc.
The new names were disclosed in a Thursday filing with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission that outlined more details of Motorola’s planned separation into two companies. Samsung smartphone coming to all major carriers
In the shadow of the latest blockbuster Apple Inc. iPhone launch, Samsung Electronics Co. has quietly positioned its own marquee smartphone with all of the national carriers in an attempt to regain its position with high-end cellphones.
Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA said Monday that they would be carrying a version of Samsung’s Galaxy S. Despite its early lead in the fast-growing e-book market, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) faces growing competition from tech giants Google Inc. (GOOG) and Apple Inc. (AAPL), according to one analyst.

T-Mobile said it has installed more antennas inside Chicago’s Union Station to provide better service inside and around the building.
The bolstered 3G network launched on Monday. The Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier said commuters at Union Station should notice improved coverage on the mezzanine and concourse levels, including areas such as the terminals, boarding lounges and the food court. Get the full story »

Motorola Inc. has hired a new senior vice president of human resources for its mobile devices and home business, which is scheduled to be separated from the rest of the company in the first quarter of 2011.
Scott Crum will take up his new position on July 19, the company said in a press release. Motorola co-Chief Executive Sanjay Jha, who heads the mobile devices business, has been building his team in advance of the planned split. Droid X bows with shutter camera, high-def video
Motorola and Verizon Wireless on Wednesday unveiled the Droid X, a new smartphone running Google’s Android operating system.
Verizon is using the Droid name to denote a series of Android devices. Motorola was the first manufacturer with Droid, released late last year, and Taiwanese company HTC has two devices under the Droid moniker at the carrier.
The Droid X has a 4.3-inch screen and an 8-megapixel camera with a shutter. It is the first device in Verizon’s line-up with a camera shutter and the ability to capture high-definition video at 720p. As part of the phone’s emphasis on video, Verizon introduced an embedded Blockbuster application that allows users to download feature-length films and rent movies. Get the full story »
Apple says iPad sales hit 3 million mark

Apple Inc said it has sold 3 million iPads since the touch-screen tablet computer hit store shelves less than three months ago, and the pace of sales suggests that demand for the device is steaming ahead.
Apple did not provide a month-by-month breakdown of sales. However, Apple previously said that it sold 1 million iPads in the first month after the U.S. launch on April 3, and had sold 2 million iPads by May 31.
It hit the 3 million mark on June 21, it said in a release Tuesday.

AT&T to build 80 new cell towers in Illinois
AT&T said it plans to build more than 80 new cell sites in Illinois this year and will also upgrade almost 300 cell sites to its third-generation, or 3G, wireless network.

By Wailin Wong | Verizon Wireless has lifted the curtain on the next device in its Droid franchise, a phone by Motorola called the Droid X.
The carrier unveiled a teaser site for the new phone, which is expected to get its official launch next week. On the page, an image of the new phone is flanked on either side by two of its predecessors — the first Droid by Motorola, which was launched late last year, and Taiwanese manufacturer HTC’s Droid Incredible, which came out in late April.
Verizon Wireless uses the “Droid” moniker to describe its premiere line of smartphones powered by Google’s Android operating system. The Droid X will be Motorola’s second Droid device.
