Motorola optimistic about enterprise business

Dow Jones Newswires | Motorola Inc. expects its enterprise business to post annualized
growth between 5 percent and 8 percent through 2012, with wireless broadband and
“next-generation” public safety helping to drive sales in that time.

Greg Brown, co-chief executive of the company and chief of Motorola
Solutions, said he expects Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility Solutions’
“growth” business, which includes the public safety and wireless
operations, to expand at least 10 percent a year over each of the next
three years.

United to offer Microsoft’s Zune audio on flights

Associated Press | United Airlines said Thursday it has equipped all of its planes with Microsoft Corp.’s Zune digital audio service. The airline said passengers can listen to up to 21 different playlists programmed by Zune, from classic rock to classical music and soundtracks.

Airlines are busy adding diversions to keep passengers entertained and, in the case of wireless Internet access, make more money. Southwest and other carriers are experimenting with charges to see how much passengers will pay to surf the Web or read e-mail at 30,000 feet.

IPad online usage more than doubles in May

From ComputerWorld | According to data from web metrics firm Net Applications, the iPad’s online usage share more than doubled in May, and spiked significantly over the weekend after Apple launched the tablet in Europe, Japan and elsewhere.

Net Applications announced Tuesday that the iPad’s share was 0.09% in May, about two-and-a-half times that of April. In other words, of every 10,000 devices connecting to the Internet, 9 were iPads. By comparison, Windows XP powered 6,253 of every 10,000 systems on the Web last month.

HP to cut 3,000 jobs as it aims for higher margins

Reuters | Hewlett-Packard Co said it aims to boost margins by cutting jobs and
reallocating spending to more profitable technology services, shrinking
its workforce by a net 3,000 jobs, or 1 percent, over three years.

The move, which will result in a $1 billion charge, comes as rivals like
IBM and Cisco Systems Inc vie for supremacy in the lucrative business
of fitting out corporate data centers that handle communications and
store huge amounts of information.

Chinese maker of iPods apologies for suicides

Associated Press | The head of Foxconn bowed deeply several times and apologized Wednesday
for a spate of suicides at the factory that makes Apple iPods and
iPhones, promising the electronics giant will try to stop more deaths. But the usually media-shy executive, Foxconn Technology Group Chairman
Terry Gou, cautioned there was only so much his company could do.

AT&T restores most U-verse Voice service

By Wailin Wong | AT&T said it has largely resolved an outage for subscribers of its U-verse Voice services. “Service has been restored for most U-verse Voice customers impacted by an earlier equipment issue,” AT&T spokeswoman Amy Grundman said in an e-mailed statement. “We continue work to restore service for a small number of customers still impacted.”

The company did not say how many customers were affected or how widespread the service disruption was, but online users of AT&T’s U-verse forums were reporting that the outage was nationwide. Subscribers to U-verse broadband Internet and television service did not appear to experience disruptions.

Wal-Mart to start selling iPhone 3GS for $97

It looks like Wal-Mart’s big, yellow smiley face is continuing to roll back its prices. Starting today, Wal-Mart is dropping the price of the brand new entry-level, 16-gigabyte iPhone 3GS to $97 with a new two-year contract. The new price is $100 cheaper than its previous price.

Motorola buying back up to $400M in debt

By Wailin Wong | Motorola Inc. said Monday it has launched two separate offers to buy back up to $400 million in outstanding debt.

The Schaumburg-based technology company is offering to buy back outstanding bonds due in 2097, of which there is $252 million outstanding. That offer expires on June 7 but can be extended.

Facebook CEO: Privacy controls ‘missed the mark’

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said the Internet social network will roll out new privacy settings for its more than 400 million users, amid growing concerns that the company is pushing users to make more of their personal data public.

“Many of you thought our controls were too complex,” said Zuckerberg in an opinion piece published on Monday in The Washington Post.

“Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark,” said the 26-year-old Zuckerberg, who co-founded Facebook in his Harvard dorm room in 2004.

Motorola exploring locations for mobile biz HQ

Motorola said Monday it is exploring potential locations for the
headquarters of its mobile phone and cable set-top box business, which
is slated to be split  off from the rest of the company next year.

“If Mobile Devices and Home make the decision to relocate its
headquarters, this would affect less than 200 people and would not occur
in 2010,” the company said in a statement.

Nokia and Yahoo introduce maps, e-mail services

Reuters | Yahoo Inc. and Nokia unveiled a wide Internet services deal, including
maps and e-mail service, as the two battle new rivals on the wireless
market.

The role of mobile services and software has increased sharply since
Apple and Google entered the industry, forcing traditional phonemakers
like Samsung and Nokia to hurry to build up their offerings.

Nokia has splashed more than $10 billion in just a few years to build a
new business by offering Internet services ranging from music downloads
to e-mail, but these have so far won few paying customers.

Google teams with Sony, Intel on ’smart’ Web TV

Associated Press | Google Inc. believes it has come up with the technology to unite Web
surfing with channel surfing on televisions. To reach the long-elusive
goal, Google has joined forces with Sony Corp., Intel Corp. and
Logitech International. The companies unveiled their much-anticipated
plan for a “smart” TV on Thursday.

The TVs are expected to go on sale in the fall in Best Buy stores.
Pricing won’t be announced until later in the year. Sales of the TVs
will be limited to the U.S. this year before expanding into other
countries.

More companies drop Blackberries for iPhones

Reuters | BlackBerry smartphones are firmly attached to the belt
loops of most business travelers, but there are signs Apple’s trendy
iPhone is making inroads into board rooms and offices.

Drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc has begun iPhone trials with some senior
executives and British bank Standard Chartered has given its corporate
BlackBerry users the option of switching to the iPhone, a move that
could result in thousands of bankers switching to the Apple device for
business on the go.

ITC to investigate Apple complaints about Kodak
