Loyola University Medical Center may seek merger

Loyola University Health System, parent of Loyola University Medical Center in west suburban Maywood, is evaluating whether to merge with another health care system, according to sources close to the west suburban teaching hospital.

Reached this afternoon, medical center executives issued a statement saying details of their discussions are confidential. The Catholic hospital, located in west suburban Maywood, is one of five large academic medical centers in the Chicago area. Get the full story »

Boeing could delay 787 delivery until summer

Boeing Co. said it was still studying its delivery schedule for the 787 Dreamliner after a published report suggested deliveries of the carbon-composite plane could be put off until late June or July.

The French newspaper Les Echos reported on its Web site that Boeing could begin deliveries next summer, based on talks between Boeing and Air France-KLM. “We continue to assess our schedule and will announce a new schedule when that work is complete,” Boeing said in a statement Thursday. After a tumultuous three year term, DDB’s Chicago president Rick Carpenter has resigned. During the search for his replacement, Mark O’Brien, DDB’s North America, will serve as Chicago’s interim chief.

Mortgage rates climb to 6-month high

U.S. mortgage rates extended their bounce from recent record lows in the latest week, according to Freddie Mac’s weekly survey of mortgage rates, as Treasury yields continue to climb.

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.61 percent for the week ended Thursday, up from the prior week’s 4.46 percent but down from 4.81 percent a year ago. Get the full story »

Google list shows hottest search terms in Chicago

Education-related Web sites ranked among the most popular Google searches for Chicagoans in 2010, according to the search giant’s newly released “Zeitgeist” list.

Google compiled lists of the hottest search items for individual U.S. cities, ranking searches based on their uniqueness to that city. A search query is considered unique if it is “disproportionately popular” in a certain city versus the rest of the country, Google said.

In Chicago, the top search was the bulky “student.cps.k12.il.us,” which is a Web portal for Chicago Public School students to manage grades and assignments. Jim Lecinski, Google’s Chicago-based managing director of U.S. sales, said students were likely bringing home flyers or notes from teachers with the URL printed on it. Their parents would then type the address into a Google search bar instead of their browser’s address bar. Get the full story »

Children’s may want TIF district for property

Children’s Memorial Hospital said Thursday that it is studying whether its property up for sale in Lincoln Park could “qualify as a Tax Increment Financing district.”

Setting up the six-acred property that is for sale at Fullerton Parkway and Lincoln Avenue would result in the allocation of “future increases in property taxes from a designated area to pay for improvements within that area,” officials from Children’s said. “The program typically lasts up to 23 years after the creation of the TIF district.” Get the full story »
