Apple shares sink on iPad report

Apple shares sank as much as 6 percent on Tuesday on disappointing iPad shipments and margins, but most analysts remained bullish on the stock, expecting a buoyant holiday season and sensing a buying opportunity.
Apple’s quarterly results were “solid,” but were “disappointing given the almost giddy investor sentiment heading into earnings and its recent history of trouncing expectations on almost every line,” Oppenheimer said in a client note.
Apple posted a better-than-expected profit helped by iPhone sales, but margins and iPad shipments came in below expectations during the fiscal fourth quarter. Get the full story »

Apple Inc. easily surpassed profit and revenue forecasts again but supply bottlenecks curbed iPad sales to below Wall Street’s bullish targets, sending its shares more than 6 percent lower.
Weaker-than-projected gross margins and iPad shipments disappointed investors who had expected more from a company that had smashed Wall Street’s targets in each of the past eight quarters.

Verizon to sell iPads, offer data plans

Verizon Wireless will join rival carrier AT&T in selling Apple Inc’s iPad later this month, showing it may move closer to disrupting the tight relationship between the device maker and AT&T.
All three models of the popular tablet computer, which comes with Wi-Fi access, will be available at Verizon Wireless stores as well as AT&T stores from October 28, the companies said. Prices will range from $629 for the 16-gigabyte (GB) model to $829 for the 64 GB model at both of their stores. Get the full story »

Apple Inc. plans to begin making a new iPhone by the end of the year, and Verizon Wireless will begin selling them in early 2011, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Motorola sues Apple for patent infringement
Motorola’s mobile devices and TV set-top box subsidiary is suing Apple for patent infringement, alleging that its California-based rival is illegally using Motorola technology in many of its core products and services, including the iPhone and the App Store.
Motorola Mobility, the subsidiary, filed complaints in the Northern District of Illinois and the Southern District of Florida, as well as with the U.S. International Trade Commission. The company said the complaints involve 18 patents relating to “early-stage innovations developed by Motorola” that can be found in the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and some Mac computers. The patents cover such technologies as antenna design, wireless e-mail and location-based services, Motorola said. Get the full story »
Toshiba to bring tablet to U.S. early next year
Toshiba Corp. plans to release new tablet devices in the U.S., Japan and elsewhere early next year, a top engineer at the company involved in the development of tablet computers told Dow Jones Newswires Tuesday.

A Microsoft slate to counter Apple’s popular iPad tablet computer will be seen by the Christmas holiday, Microsoft’s Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Tuesday.
Ballmer did not say whether the palm-sized slates would actually be on sale in time for Christmas, nor did he say who would make them. Microsoft has been slow to respond to the iPad, and has also made little headway in mobile phones.
“You’ll see new slates with Windows on them. You’ll see them this Christmas,” he told an audience of students, staff and journalists at the London School of Economics. Get the full story »

Shares of Apple dropped more than 2 percent in early trading on Tuesday, as rumors swirled that the company’s No. 2 executive was departing.
It was not immediately clear what caused Apple’s shares to fall, but unconfirmed speculation on the Internet said Tim Cook would leave Apple to join Hewlett-Packard Co, which is searching for a new CEO to replace Mark Hurd.
Representatives from Apple and Hewlett-Packard declined to comment, and analysts quickly dismissed the rumor. HP is holding its analyst meeting later Tuesday. Get the full story »
Verizon CEO hints iPhone not coming soon
Comments from Verizon Communications Inc. CEO Ivan Seidenberg leave little room for the possibility of a Verizon version of the iPhone in the near future.
Speaking to an investor conference Thursday, Seidenberg said nothing about an iPhone for the company’s current network, but said he hopes Apple Inc. will come around and allow Verizon to sell the phone for a new network it’s building.
