Apple to expand iPhone 4 sales on July 30

Apple Inc. said on Monday that its popular iPhone 4 model will go on sale in an additional 17 countries on Friday, July 30.

The newest version of iPhone went on sale in France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. in late June, creating a carnival-like atmosphere and drawing tens of thousands of eager fans to Apple stores and retail partners. Get the full story »

EU launches 2 antitrust probes against IBM

European Union competition regulators launched two antitrust probes Monday against International Business Machines Corp., suspecting it of abusing its dominant position on the mainframe computer market.

One investigation followed complaints by emulator software vendors T3 and Turbo Hercules against IBM’s practices and focuses on the U.S. computer giant’s alleged tying of mainframe hardware to its mainframe operating system. Get the full story »

Motorola sues Huawei for trade secret theft

U.S. mobile phone maker Motorola Inc. has sued China’s Huawei Technologies Co. for alleged theft of trade secrets, highlighting the fast-growing Chinese firm’s difficulty in shaking the nation’s reputation for piracy.

In the amended complaint, filed on July 16 in a federal court in Chicago, Motorola claimed an engineer shared information about a Motorola transceiver and other technology with Huawei’s founder, Ren Zhengfei, a former officer in China’s People’s Liberation Army. Get the full story »

Facebook scores low on customer satisfaction

From The Wall Street Journal | The American Customer Satisfaction Index, developed by the University of Michigan’s Business School, reported that Facebook has one of the lowest scores in its regular survey of consumer satisfaction with companies. Facebook scored in the bottom 5 percent of all private sector companies, in the same range as the IRS tax e-filing system, airlines and cable companies. Among social websites, Wikipedia led the survey with a 77, followed by YouTube at 73.

Boeing, Argon deal wins U.S. antitrust approval

Boeing Co. has won U.S. antitrust approval to buy defense manufacturer Argon ST Inc , the Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday.

Boeing said in early June that it would buy Argon for about $775 million to beef up its capabilities in sensors, communications technologies and information management. Get the full story »

Toyota, Tesla to team up on electric RAV4

Tesla Motors Inc. and Toyota Motor Corp. plan to develop an electric version of the RAV4 SUV that would go on sale in the U.S. two years from now.

The venture is the first project announced by the companies since Toyota purchased about 3% of Tesla for $50 million earlier this year.

Google misses 2Q earnings mark as expenses grow

Google Inc. missed Wall Street’s profit estimates in its second quarter, as rising operating expenses offset a 24 percent jump in the Internet search giant’s revenue.

Motorola shares up on Nokia Siemens interest

Motorola shares surged nearly 4 percent this morning on speculation the company may be selling its networks equipment unit to competitor Nokia Siemens.

The Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday that Nokia Siemens and Motorola are in talks for the Schaumburg-based company’s networks business, which makes infrastructure and equipment for wireless operators. Get the full story »

EBay sued for $3.8B-plus in patent case

EBay Inc. was sued for at least $3.8 billion Tuesday by a Connecticut company that accused the online auctioneer and retailer of infringing six patents to develop lucrative payment systems such as PayPal.

According to the complaint filed Tuesday by XPRT Ventures LLC in the federal court in Delaware, eBay allegedly stole information shared in confidence by the inventors on XPRT’s  patents and incorporated it into features in its own payment systems, such as PayPal Pay Later and PayPal Buyer Credit. Intel keeps good 2Q earnings news going

Intel Corp. delivered a better-than-expected sales forecast and results on strong corporate demand for personal computers and servers, despite concerns over a tech industry slowdown.

Apple shares fall on iPhone 4 quality concerns

Shares of Apple Inc slid more than 4 percent Tuesday after a poor review for its iPhone 4 from an influential consumer guide underpinned mounting complaints about the hot-selling device’s reception.

Consumer Reports said Monday that it could not recommend the iPhone 4 — which sold 1.7 million units worldwide in its first three days — after its tests confirmed concerns about signal loss when the device is held in a certain way. Get the full story »

BlackBerry maker RIM in push to tap China market

Research in Motion, maker of BlackBerry smartphone, said it is preparing to launch an applications store and consumer Internet services in China as part of its push into the world’s top mobile market. The upcoming Chinese App World applications store would follow RIM’s May launch of BlackBerry service in China through China Telecom, one of China’s three major carriers.
