A number of metropolitan areas in Illinois are getting wireless speed boosts this year as Verizon Wireless, Clearwire and T-Mobile expand and upgrade their 4G networks.
Verizon announced Tuesday that it is adding 59 markets to its 4G network, launched in December in Chicago and 38 other markets. By the end of the year, Bloomington/Normal, Carbondale, Champaign, Rockford and Springfield will also be on the network. Get the full story »

Sprint Nextel Corp. and Deutsche Telekom AG are again discussing options for combining Sprint with the German company’s U.S. subsidiary, T-Mobile USA, though a deal is unlikely in the near term, people familiar with the matter said.
A deal would combine the third and fourth largest wireless carriers in the U.S. and create a substantial counterweight to industry leaders AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group. Get the full story »

Prepaid wireless carrier Cricket Communications Inc. has expanded its new over-the-air music downloading service to Chicago and 12 other markets, offering unlimited downloads as part of a $55 monthly plan.
The company, which is owned by San Diego, Calif.-based Leap Wireless International, Inc., launched its Muve Music service in Las Vegas last month. Cricket said its service includes the entire catalogs from Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music, as well as music from independent label IODA. Third-quarter earnings at Telephone & Data Systems Inc. and its U.S. Cellular Corp. business rose, with U.S. Cellular losing more subscribers than a year earlier.
Both companies topped analysts’ expectations and adjusted their revenue outlooks for the full year. U.S. Cellular narrowed its target while TDS raised its to $785 million to $800 million from $760 million to $790 million as the company also expects higher profit than before. Get the full story »
