Exelon CEO’s pay rises 14%

Exelon CEO John Rowe saw his total compensation for 2010 rise 14 percent to $7.2 million, according to documents filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission, an increase largely tied to a change in the theoretical value of his pension.

Rowe had the opportunity to earn stock performance awards worth $1.1 million — compensation that is directly tied to the performance of Exelon stock. But the company’s shares performed in the negative direction in 2010 and Rowe received no equity for performance.

CBOE volatility index falls to 2010 low

From Bloomberg News | The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, or VIX, which is considered the benchmark index for U.S. stock options, fell to a three-year low as the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index moved in its narrowest range since April 2007 and rose for a fifth day to reach a two-year high.

CBOE parent to add electronic exchange

The parent of the Chicago Board Options Exchange is hooking up some of the biggest Wall Street banks and trading firms to a long-planned electronic exchange, set to launch in late October.

Stocks slide, and Dow can’t hold on to 10,000

Stocks ended lower Thursday after early gains from a better report on jobless claims faded. The Dow Jones industrial average closed below 10,000 for the first time since early July. The Dow lost 74 points, having been up as much as 45 earlier. The back-and-forth trading pattern has been common in recent weeks as many investors remain unconvinced that the economic recovery will hold.

GM CEO Whitacre says IPO filing not ready yet

General Motors Co. has begun to work on the U.S. regulatory filing needed for an initial public offering but does not expect to have that ready in the next two weeks, Chief Executive Ed Whitacre said on Thursday.

“We are working on an S-1,” Whitacre told Reuters, referring to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission registration statement required for a securities offering. Get the full story »

Stock options a disappearing perk

CNN | Long a popular tool for compensating employees at burgeoning start-ups and top executives at multi-national corporations, the practice of granting options to workers has increasingly fallen out of favor.

Last year, a little more than three-quarters of the companies in the S&P 1500, which tracks small- and mid-cap stocks as well as the conventional S&P 500 index, relied upon stock options to pay their CEOs.
