U.S.-South Korea trade pact nears with tariff deal
South Korea has agreed to give the United States five years to phase out a 2.5 percent tariff on Korean-built cars, rather than cut the tariff immediately, clearing the way for a deal on a stalled U.S.-South Korea trade pact, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

EU forges first Asian trade pact with S. Korea
The European Union and South Korea signed a free-trade deal Wednesday that could double trade between them and trigger more calls among Asian states for such pacts with the 27-nation bloc.

Mayor Richard Daley will travel to China and South Korea next month to promote Chicago as a destination for businesses and tourists.
The Sept. 18-24 trip will be sponsored by the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and World Business Chicago. The mayor will make stops in Shanghai, China, and in the cities of Busan and Seoul in South Korea.
Korea to bankroll ’smart’ Chicago skyscrapers
By dimming lights or lowering water temperature on a massive scale, the owners of some of Chicago’s signature skyscrapers are banking on new technology that would dramatically cut the city’s energy usage and save millions of dollars.
The technology is being bankrolled by an unusual source: The Republic of Korea, which, under a complex agreement to be signed today, has agreed to install energy-saving equipment in up to 14 Chicago buildings during the next few months. Korean officials have pledged to pay millions to Illinois colleges for research and development efforts related to “smart grid” technology. Get the full story »
S. Korea, U.S. cyberattacks do no damage
Hundreds of computers that helped cause a wave of outages on U.S. and South Korean government websites last July launched new attacks on the same sites, but no major interference was reported, police said Thursday.
The computers were programmed to attack every July 7, according to police, so this year’s assault appeared to be a continuation of last year’s, which began over the July 4 holiday weekend in the U.S. but reached South Korea on July 7. Get the full story »
