Eggs recalled after salmonella found at Ohio farm
Evidence of salmonella has been found at an Ohio egg farm that’s received financing from the owner of an Iowa egg farm that was behind a massive recall earlier this year. Cal-Maine Foods Inc., the nation’s biggest egg seller and distributor, said it is recalling 288,000 eggs the company had purchased from supplier Ohio Fresh Eggs after a test showed salmonella at the Ohio farm.

Food and Drug Administration officials said Monday that there is no evidence a massive outbreak of salmonella in eggs has spread beyond two Iowa farms, though a team of investigators is still trying to figure out what caused it.

FDA chief says egg recall shows more power needed
Food and Drug Administration chief Margaret Hamburg said Monday her agency is limited by law to a mostly reactive stance on food safety and argued that it needs a more “preventive approach.”
Giving a series of network interviews in the wake of the egg and salmonella breakout, Hamburg said the FDA is taking the issue “very, very seriously.” At the same time, she said Congress should pass pending legislation that would provide her agency with greater enforcement power, including new authority over imported food.
How to prevent illness after egg recall
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued tips for consumers worried about the recall of 228 million eggs linked to an outbreak of salmonella poisoning.
Authorities say eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, were linked to illnesses in Colorado, California and Minnesota. The CDC said about 200 cases of the strain of salmonella linked to the eggs were reported weekly in June and July, four times the usual number. Get the full story »
Suburban woman sues Subway, alleges salmonella
A suburban Chicago woman who says she got sick after eating a Subway sandwich is suing the restaurant and the chain’s parent company. Forty-six-year-old Alicea Bush-Bailey of Bolingbrook claims Subway failed to prevent an outbreak of salmonella and said the sandwich she ate put her in the emergency room.
