Twitter co-founder hopes to create news network

Biz Stone, the co-founder of popular microblogging site Twitter, is eager to harness the vast quantities of information that it helps its users share to create a news network, he told Reuters Monday.

A Twitter news network would not necessarily be run by Twitter itself but would be in partnership with several existing news organizations, and would be open, Stone said. Get the full story »

Dow Jones, Briefing.com settle ‘hot news’ lawsuit

Dow Jones & Co. and the Chicago-based financial news service Briefing.com have agreed to a settlement of a copyright lawsuit, in which the latter has admitted to misappropriating “hot news” and headlines for its website.

Briefing.com agreed to pay an unspecified sum to Dow Jones, a unit of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, and admit to liability for infringing Dow Jones’ copyrights in published articles. Dow Jones called the payment “substantial.” Get the full story »

News Corp. ices digital newsstand plan

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. has put on hold ambitious plans to create a subscription online newsstand, after failing to attract enough interest among other news organizations, a person familiar with the plan said.

The owner of the Times of London, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal will reassign the staff working on “Project Alesia,” which aimed to charge readers for a bundle of newspaper and magazine digital content.

New York Times expects 3Q loss, lower revenue

The New York Times Co. said Wednesday it expects to show a loss for the third quarter, with newspaper advertising still in decline.

Unlike the prior quarter, the Times Co. said that growth in digital ad sales will not make up for declines on the print side. Making matters worse, the company expects a drop in revenue from subscription and newsstand sales. Get the full story »

Yahoo revamps e-mail, shows new products

Yahoo Inc., aiming to reverse the slide in time that people spend on its Web sites, previewed updates to several advertising and consumer products on Thursday, including a revamp of its e-mail service and additional features in its search engine.

At an event at Yahoo’s Sunnyvale, Calif., headquarters, Chief Product Officer Blake Irving laid out a three-year vision for Yahoo as an “innovative technology company with the largest digital media content and communications business in the world.” Get the full story »
