Dow Jones, Briefing.com settle ‘hot news’ lawsuit

Dow Jones & Co. and the Chicago-based financial news service Briefing.com have agreed to a settlement of a copyright lawsuit, in which the latter has admitted to misappropriating “hot news” and headlines for its website.

Briefing.com agreed to pay an unspecified sum to Dow Jones, a unit of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, and admit to liability for infringing Dow Jones’ copyrights in published articles. Dow Jones called the payment “substantial.” Get the full story »

News Corp. ices digital newsstand plan

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. has put on hold ambitious plans to create a subscription online newsstand, after failing to attract enough interest among other news organizations, a person familiar with the plan said.

The owner of the Times of London, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal will reassign the staff working on “Project Alesia,” which aimed to charge readers for a bundle of newspaper and magazine digital content.

Licensing deal to keep AP on Google

Google Inc. will be able to continue posting content from The Associated Press under a new licensing deal the companies announced Monday after months of sometimes thorny negotiations.
