Navistar representatives, along with roughly a dozen Illinois officials, announced plans this morning to move the manufacturing company’s headquarters to Lisle, retaining thousands of jobs in DuPage County.
“I’ve got one thing to say. Illinois is Navistar country,” said Gov Pat Quinn. “We believe in Navistar.”

U.S. job openings were flat in June while the number of new hires slipped, according to a government report on Wednesday that underscored the persistent weakness in the labor market.

Mayor Richard Daley sounded like a politician who’s going to run for re-election as he delivered his annual State of the City speech, said several aldermen who heard it today. Throughout the 40-minute talk, Daley touched on future improvements he thinks are important for Chicago’s success in areas of job growth and education.
Heavy-equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. said Friday it will build a parts plant for large mining machines in North Carolina, and it expects to employ about 510 full-time and contract workers in five years.
Construction is scheduled to begin in November on the Winston-Salem factory where workers will machine, assemble, test and paint axle assemblies for large mining machines. Production is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2012. Get the full story »
President Barack Obama on Friday cast the state of the economy in upbeat terms, declaring that it was headed in the right direction even as employers slashed payrolls last month for the first time in half a year. The unemployment rate dropped to 9.5 percent. “To every American who is looking for work, I promise you we’re going to keep on doing everything that we can,” Obama said. “I will do everything in my power to help our economy create jobs and opportunities for all people.”
Republican governor candidate Sen. Bill Brady today said he supports lowering Illinois’ minimum wage if he wins in November and the state rate remains higher than the federal one. “For the state of Illinois to come in and micromanage wages above the federal minimum wage is a mistake,” Brady, a state senator from Bloomington, told reporters.

hiring by private employers is healthy despite last week’s disappointing
jobs report. The Labor Department says the number of jobs advertised at
the end of April rose to 3.1 million from 2.8 million in March. That’s
the most openings since December 2008.

employees at its Downers Grove call center as the company shifts those
operations to an outside provider with operations in Texas and Canada.
“After considering a number of options, it was determined that using a
third party to manage our customer service operations was the best
business decision for the company,” Redbox, which is a unit of Coinstar
Inc., said in a statement. “This decision did not come easily, but it
was ultimately the best option for achieving the level of service we
need to provide our customers.”
