Quinn unveils proposed workers’ comp reforms

Pat Quinn on Friday unveiled his proposed overhaul of the state’s workers’ compensation system, suggesting changes his office says will save employers money while preventing potential abuses that have attracted the attention of downstate federal prosecutors.
The governor’s plan to change the way workers are paid after injury or illness on the job includes limiting payments for injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and slashing the amount doctors and hospital receive for treating hurt workers.
Quinn to seek higher fees on nuclear generators
Gov. Pat Quinn says he plans to seek higher fees on power generator Exelon Corp. to ensure the safety of Illinois nuclear power plants in the aftermath of Japan’s nuclear crisis.
Quinn to carmakers: State’s ready for electric cars
Standing in front of a fast-charging station at the Chicago Auto Show, Gov. Pat Quinn called on automakers to bring electric vehicles to the state in light of charging infrastructure planned for the Chicago area.
“We’re going to have electric vehicles galore in the state of Illinois,” he said. “We want to be the nation’s capital for electric vehicles.”

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn today signed a major income tax increase the Legislature passed earlier this week.
BIO to return to Chicago in 2013 and 2016

The Biotechnology Industry Organization said its international convention will return to Chicago’s McCormick Place in 2013 and 2016.
“Chicago has hosted two successful and exciting BIO International Conventions, in 2006 and 2010, and we are thrilled to bring the world’s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry back to the windy city and the Midwest,” said Jim Greenwood, chief executive officer of the BIO International Convention.
The convention attracts more than 15,000 people from the agricultural, pharmaceutical and medical device industries as well as government leaders from around the world. Get the full story »
Quinn to use state cash to keep jobs program
Despite the state’s financial woes, Gov. Pat Quinn today said he would pump about $75 million into a jobs program to keep it alive through the end of November.
Quinn OKs grace period for back taxes
Taxpayers who owe the state will be able to pay up without facing fines for five weeks this fall. Gov. Pat Quinn quietly signed a measure into law today setting up a grace period that runs from Oct. 1 to Nov. 8. State officials estimate the amnesty could bring in about $250 million for Illinois’ depleted coffers.
The law covers unpaid back taxes from July 2002 to July 2009. If taxpayers fail to make good during the amnesty, interest and penalties will be doubled, according to a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Revenue.
