December snowstorms that crippled air travel in Europe and along the Atlantic seaboard in the U.S. cost the parent company of United Airlines $25 million in consolidated passenger revenue, and will reduce fourth-quarter earnings by $10 million, the carrier said Friday.
Continental Airlines, which along with United is a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings Inc., was hit hard by the Boxing Day blizzards that brought operations to a halt at its hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and other greater New York area airports. American Airlines will be hosting happy hour on certain flights during the month of December.
The company said Wednesday it will be selling cocktails, beer and wine for $5 on domestic, Canada, Caribbean and Mexico flights scheduled to depart between 5 p.m. and 5:59 p.m. The $5 price represents a discount of $1 on beer and $2 on liquor and wine. Passengers on American Airlines, American Eagle and AmericanConnection flights can take advantage of the promotion, which lasts the duration of the flight.

The Obama administration on Monday banned all cargo shipments to the United States from Somalia, expanding a ban imposed initially on shipments from Yemen in the wake of a recent foiled bomb plot.
Two weeks ago, authorities in Dubai and the United Kingdom intercepted two bombs hidden in toner cartridges destined for the United States from Yemen via FedEx and United Parcel Service after a tip from Saudi Arabia.
In addition to the expanded cargo ban, the Department of Homeland Security also prohibited toner and ink cartridges over 16 ounces from any U.S. passenger flights, domestic or international, bound for the United States. Get the full story »

Controversial low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is rolling the dice in Chicago, adding new daily flights from O’Hare to gambling havens Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N.J.
Spirit plans to begin flying to Las Vegas on Nov. 11, 2010, and Atlantic City on March 3, 2011.
The discounter is kicking off the service with a blue-light special: Introductory fares of $9 and $39, each way, for round-trip tickets purchased Thursday or Friday. Get the full story »

An experimental solar-powered plane completed its first 24-hour test flight successfully Thursday, proving that the aircraft can collect enough energy from the sun during the day to stay aloft all night. The test brings the Swiss-led project one step closer to its goal of circling the globe using only energy from the sun.
