ADM 2Q profit jumps 29% on ethanol recovery
U.S. agricultural processor and ethanol producer Archer Daniels Midland Co reported stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings on Tuesday as rising grain prices and robust global demand bolstered results, sending its shares up 6.3 percent in premarket trading.
For the fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31, net profit was $732 million, or $1.14 per share, compared with $567 million, or 88 cents per share, a year earlier. Get the full story »
EPA approves wider use of ethanol in gas
U.S. regulators on Friday backed a request that would sharply boost the use of corn-based ethanol in more than half the nation’s cars, elevating the stakes in a contentious debate over the safety and cost of converting more corn into fuel.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s announcement boosting the ethanol blend rate in gasoline to 15 percent from 10 percent in vehicles built from 2001 to 2006 was not a surprise, coming just months after it allowed the E15 in cars and trucks built in 2007 or later. Get the full story »
Recycling to put a Four Loko in your tank
Truckloads of Four Loko and other alcohol-laced energy drinks are being recycled into ethanol and other products after federal authorities told manufacturers the beverages were dangerous and caused users to become “wide-awake drunk.”
Wholesalers from Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and other East Coast states started sending cases of the high-alcohol, caffeinated malt beverages to MXI Environmental Services in Virginia after the Food and Drug Administration cracked down on the sale of such beverages in November. Auto, engine makers sue EPA to block E15 use
U.S. automakers and engine makers sued the Environmental Protection Agency Monday over its decision to allow higher blends of ethanol for newer cars, saying it could cause confusion at the pumps and damage engines in older vehicles.
The suit asks the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to send the decision back to the EPA and asks the court to review whether the decision violates the Clean Air Act. Get the full story »
EPA delays ruling on E15 fuel for older cars

ADM profit misses Street view, shares fall
Archer Daniels Midland Co. the world’s largest corn processor and among the largest U.S. ethanol producers, reported weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings Tuesday, hampered by inventory charges, and its shares fell more than 7 percent.
For the first quarter ended Sept. 30, ADM reported a net profit of $345 million, or 54 cents per share, down from $496 million, or 77 cents per share, a year earlier. Get the full story »
U.S. farmers can’t meet booming corn demands
Exporters, livestock feeders and ethanol makers are going through the U.S. corn stockpile faster than farmers can grow the crops, the government said on Friday. ADM ‘disappointed’ in ethanol blend ruling delay
U.S. ethanol producer Archer Daniels Midland Co. said Friday it was disappointed that the Environmental Protection Agency has delayed for a second time a ruling on higher blends of ethanol in the U.S. fuel supply.
