Weight-loss surgery backed for some diabetics

A diabetes expert group backed the use of weight-loss surgery Monday for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in severely obese patients.

FDA: Beware of fake potassium iodide products

In the wake of the crisis in Japan, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers to beware of inadvertently buying fake iodide products that are supposed to help protect against radiation.

Products to watch out for include fake tablets and liquids purporting to be iodide, as well as dietary supplements and other products that say they protect against radiation, said the spokesperson adding there are only three FDA-approved potassium iodide products that protect against radiation. FDA: Egg problems seem limited to 2 farms

Food and Drug Administration officials said Monday that there is no evidence a massive outbreak of salmonella in eggs has spread beyond two Iowa farms, though a team of investigators is still trying to figure out what caused it.

How to prevent illness after egg recall

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued tips for consumers worried about the recall of 228 million eggs linked to an outbreak of salmonella poisoning.

Authorities say eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, were linked to illnesses in Colorado, California and Minnesota. The CDC said about 200 cases of the strain of salmonella linked to the eggs were reported weekly in June and July, four times the usual number. Get the full story »

Flu vaccines on the way earlier than usual

Two flu vaccine makers said Friday that they had started shipping supplies for the U.S. market, one of the earliest starts to distributing seasonal influenza vaccine.

And U.S. officials said they were changing the labeling on a vaccine made by Australia’s CSL Ltd. because it appears to have caused a higher than usual rate of seizures in children. Get the full story »

Abbott gets OK for gonorrhea/chlamydia test

Abbott Laboratories said Monday that theĀ  Food and Drug Administration approved a new diagnostic test that allows for the detection of two sexually transmitted diseases.

Abbott’s RealTime Chlamydia trachomatis/neisseria gonorrhoeae (CT/NG) assay and Abbott’s m2000 System can detect gonorrhea and chlamydia, a disease that often goes untreated because of its lack of symptoms. Get the full story »
