Southwest Air pilots approve bigger Boeing jet

Southwest Airlines Co said its pilots approved changes to their labor agreement allowing the addition of a bigger-capacity Boeing Co 737 plane that will enable the carrier to transport more passengers as it expands.

The traditional low-fare airline, which is planning to buy rival AirTran Holdings Inc to bolster its presence in U.S. East Coast cities, said it would now move to finalize talks with Boeing on substitutions of 737-800 models for 737-700s. Airbus to revamp aviation’s A320 workhorse

European planemaker Airbus plans to upgrade its best-selling A320 medium-haul jets from 2016 with new engines offering 15 percent fuel savings, as it fends off upstart competitors.

Airbus said on Wednesday it would invest just over $1.3 billion in the “A320neo” project to improve efficiency and cut harmful emissions and noise. Get the full story »

Sources: Airbus, Boeing mull further output hikes

Airbus and Boeing have begun sounding out suppliers on their ability to cope with further production increases of their most popular jets, taking combined output well above 80 a month within four to five years.

Three senior industry sources told Reuters consultations had started on a historic upswing which could see Airbus producing as many as 44 A320 single-aisle planes by 2014 or 2015 and its rival simultaneously rising to as many as 42 737s a month. Get the full story »

Continental adds new Chicago-Florida flights

Just in time for spring break, Continental Airlines is launching service from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

Boeing: China to be world’s largest jet market by 2030

China will become the world’s biggest airplane market after the U.S. over the next 20 years and will likely require 4,330 new commercial airplanes valued at $480 billion over the same forecast period, with the bulk of new deliveries expected to be for smaller, single-aisle planes, according to a projection by Boeing Co. Boeing gets orders for 30 737s

Boeing Co. says it has received orders for 30 more of its 737s in the past week. Boeing’s weekly order update on Thursday did not say who is buying the planes.

Boeing customers have ordered 382 of those planes so far this year, out of a total of 422 orders for all commercial planes. The 737 have a list price of between $51 million to $87 million, although discounts are common.

Boeing adds orders for 20 new planes

Boeing Co. says it booked orders for 20 new aircraft in the last week, although it lost a few, too. The new orders include 15 new 737s. That jet is a workhorse and it dominates Boeing’s order book. Customers also ordered five new 777s, a larger plane often used on longer flights. None of the customers were identified.

Boeing gets order for four 737s, loses a 777 order

Boeing Co said Thursday it took orders for four 737 narrowbody planes and lost one order for a 777 in the week ended Aug. 17.

Boeing, the world’s second largest commercial planemaker after EADS unit Airbus, said its net orders for 2010 so far number 258 compared with 142 commercial plane orders in 2009. Get the full story »

Boeing to boost production of popular 737 jets

Dow Jones Newswires | Boeing Co. announced Monday it will boost production rates on the
aircraft maker’s 737 next-generation planes in early 2012, citing strong
customer demand as the global economy continues to recover.

The company’s production rate, which is currently at 31.5 planes per
month, will be increased to 34 planes. Boeing, which along with European
rival Airbus has been eyeing production increases as airline and
finance market conditions improve, on Monday said it could increase
production again, depending on demand.
