One of the most influential U.S. business groups accused President Barack Obama on Wednesday of neglecting job creation and slowing economic uncertainty with burdensome tax and regulatory policies.

A congressional debate about extending Bush-era tax cuts for middle class American families will probably happen later this year, the White House said Monday.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the debate would probably happen in the fall, before the conclusions of a fiscal commission appointed by President Barack Obama on the U.S. deficit challenge, which is due by year-end.

In excerpts of remarks to be delivered on Wednesday in Wisconsin, Obama promotes Wall Street reform legislation pending in Congress, saying it will “protect our economy from the recklessness and irresponsibility of a few.” Obama continued a tone that has characterized some of his recent public remarks, accusing Republicans of being out of touch with the struggles of ordinary Americans. Ending more than two weeks of often-contentious negotiations, House and Senate lawmakers reached agreement early Friday on the most far-reaching rewrite of financial rules since the Great Depression.
The final details, including creation of an agency to protect consumers in the financial marketplace and new regulations to reduce risk-taking by large banks and limit their trading of complex derivatives, were hashed out in a marathon 20-hour session that began Thursday morning.
Lawmakers on a joint conference committee labored until dawn reconciling House and Senate versions of the legislation in time for President Obama to brief foreign leaders on the completed deal at a major economic summit in Canada starting Friday.

From the New York Post | India-based textile company SKNL, which now control’s Hart Schaffner Marx and Hickey Freeman men’s suit maker HMX, is planning to cut costs 15 percent during the next three years, leading to concerns it may shut on of its U.S. factories, according to the New York Post. Workers at the Des Plaines plant, run by the bankrupt company known for making suits worn by President Barack Obama, are particularly concerned, the report said.

Dow Jones Newswires | U.S. truck maker Navistar International Corp. said Thursday it will deliver its first electric truck to FedEx Corp. by the end of the year, thanks, in part, to stimulus funding provided last year by the government.
Navistar’s eStar model is the first medium-duty commercial vehicle to receive the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s clean-fuel fleet vehicle certification and the California Air Resources Board’s certification as a zero-emission vehicle, the company said.

Tribune staff report | On the one-year anniversary of the federal stimulus package, President Barack Obama defended his plan and accused Republicans of scoffing at the stimulus while enjoying its benefits.
“There are those, let’s face it, across the aisle who have tried to score political points by attacking what we did, even as many of them show up at ribbon-cutting ceremonies for projects in their districts,” Obama said, according to a Reuters report.
In Illinois, some jobs have been created. According to Recovery.gov, the
official Web site tracking the stimulus spending, about 11,280 Illinois
jobs were saved or created from February 2009 to September 2009.
Illinois received about $7.75 billion in funds from the stimulus package
during the past year.
