Some of the nation’s biggest banks are imposing a variety of new fees on people who withdraw money from automated-teller machines.
The move is the latest example of the burgeoning new fees that banks are imposing on customers accustomed to years of free services. It’s Fifth Third in, Bank of America out, at CTA stops around Chicago.
Fifth Third Bank said it has been awarded the opportunity to install 63 automated teller machines in local CTA stops, giving the Cincinnati-based bank the biggest presence on the Chicago area’s train system. Installation of nearly all of the 63 have been completed in the past two months, Fifth Third said.
The number of ATMs at CTA stops has grown steadily since they were introduced in the system in 2003. Get the full story »

Chase, Chicago’s biggest bank in terms of branches and deposit market share, is making it more expensive to stop payment on a check, do wire transfers and use a foreign ATM, among other things.
Chase is also telling its checking and savings customers that starting on Feb. 5, it’ll hike several other fees.
The bank recently instituted a minimum direct deposit threshold to maintain free checking if customers don’t meet certain other criteria. Get the full story »

A security expert has identified flaws in the design of some automated teller machines that make them vulnerable to hackers, who could make the dispensers spit out their cash holdings.
