Apple to stick to iPad 2 global rollout schedule

Apple Inc. will stick to plans to roll out its newest iPad on Friday to 25 more markets, including France and the United Kingdom, even as it fails to meet the high demand for the gadget in the United States.

Apple to start iPad 2 sales online in wee hours

Apple Inc. will kick off online sales of its new iPad in the early hours Friday before its evening store launch of the tablet computer.

iPad 2 dents Motorola Mobility stock price

Shares of Motorola Mobility  slumped Thursday as Apple Inc.’s  new iPad won rave reviews.

Motorola Mobility shares were recently down 5.2 percent, at $26.90.

Report: Apple begins production of new iPad

Apple Inc. has started manufacturing a new version of its iPad tablet computer with a built-in camera and faster processor, said people familiar with the matter.

The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the first model, these people said. It will have at least one camera on the front of the device, but the resolution of the display will be similar to the first iPad, these people said. It will also have more memory and a more powerful graphics processor, they said.

The new iPad will initially be available through Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc., but not Sprint Nextel Corp. or T-Mobile USA in the U.S., according to some of the people familiar with the matter. Get the full story »

Android tablets closing gap with iPad in 4Q

Bloomberg News | According to Strategy Analytics, Google Android tablet computers made headway against the Apple iPad in the fourth quarter. The Boston-based research firm said Android tablets accounted for 22 percent of global shipments, up from 2.3 percent in the third quarter; iPad shipments were 75 percent, down from 96 percent.

RIM PlayBook tablet to sell for less than $500

RIM plans to price the PlayBook tablet at less than $500. (AP)

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, a late entrant in the tablet computer market, will take on Apple’s iPad with competitive pricing of its PlayBook.

RIM, which said it will sell the PlayBook for less than $500, is confident the 7-inch tablet would help sustain “fast sales growth,” said RIM Co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie.

RIM’s Nasdaq-listed shares jumped more than 6 percent on Wednesday to as high as $58.72, their highest since June.
