Apple sues Amazon over its ‘App Store’

Apple Inc. sued Amazon.com Inc. over its use of the phrase App Store, accusing the online retailer of trademark infringement. Boeing shares gain after test flight of new 747

Shares of Chicago-based Boeing Co. gained 3 percent Monday, a day after the successful first test flight of the 747-8 Intercontinental.

Tribune Co.’s Meek to exit company

Chicago Tribune parent Tribune co. is moving its Tribune Digital divsion into Tribune Technology, under Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Steve Gable, employees were told today.

Don Meek, who had led Tribune Digital as executive vice president since November, when it changed its name from Tribune Interactive, is leaving the company.

United Continental shifts more flying overseas

The company that runs United and Continental airlines says it will shift more flying to international routes this year.

The combined United and Continental will cut domestic flying 2 percent to 3 percent this year. That cut is a half percentage point more than previously planned. International flying will rise 3 percent to 4 percent — also a half percentage point more than planned before. Their overall 2011 flying is expected to be about the same as last year. Carson’s parent sues Freed over missed payment

Carson Pirie Scott’s corporate parent is suing Joseph Freed and Associates, accusing the developer of breach of contract for missing a $3 million payment promised to the retailer for exiting its flagship State Street store in 2007.

McRIL LLC, an entity associated with Carson parent Bon-Ton Stores Inc., claimed in a lawsuit filed Friday in a Chicago federal court that Freed and One South State Street LLC missed the final payment of a $22 million lease termination fee that was due March 1. Get the full story »

Kraft MiO ads bring in Second City’s ‘Sassy Gay Friend’


Northfield-based Kraft Foods is promoting its new product MiO, which it introduced in February, by running ad spots online featuring a character from The Second City called “Sassy Gay Friend.”

The “Sassy Gay Friend,” who has been featured in various viral videos produced by The Second City, first appeared online in 2010 when The Second City put up the scenes on YouTube. The joke in the viral videos involves famous scenes from various Shakespeare plays — such as Ophelia’s suicide in Hamlet, or the scene in Romeo and Juliet where Juliet is about to kill herself. The twist occurs when the “Sassy Gay Friend” unexpectedly enters the scenes and changes the outcome.

In the new videos for MiO, a Kraft product that lets consumers flavor their water, the “Sassy Gay Friend” appears in a scene from Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” Get the full story »

Georgetown Company acquires 35 N. State Street
