Northern Trust expects gold to keep climbing

Northern Trust expects gold to continue climbing until interest rates rise and developed economies get their budget deficits under control, the firm’s chief investment strategist said on Monday.

The U.S. bank, which has more than $600 billion in assets, also raised its asset allocation for gold by five times to 5 percent at its last review in September, James McDonald, Northern Trust’s chief investment strategist said in an interview. Get the full story »

Boeing confident 787 is on track

Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner program is on track for first delivery in early 2011, a senior company executive said on Monday.

Boeing said in August the first delivery of its 787 Dreamliner will be delayed by several weeks to the middle of the first quarter of 2011 from the fourth quarter of this year due to a delay in the availability of a Rolls-Royce PLC engine. Get the full story »

Facebook apps like FarmVille share private info

Many of the most popular applications, or “apps,” on the social-networking site Facebook Inc. have been transmitting identifying information — in effect, providing access to people’s names and, in some cases, their friends’ names — to dozens of advertising and Internet tracking companies, a Wall Street Journal investigation has found.

The issue affects tens of millions of Facebook app users, including people who set their profiles to be completely private. The practice breaks Facebook’s rules, and renews questions about its ability to keep identifiable information about its users’ activities secure. Get the full story »

Koskenalusta ends Executives’ Club reign

Kaarina Koskenalusta, the president of the Executives’ Club of Chicago, resigned the post she had held for 25 years, the club announced in a press release distributed late Friday.

Koskenalusta is leaving to become a principal at the Dilenschneider Group, working from Chicago and New York, according to the club’s release. She will be in charge of global client relationships.

The club will work with executive search firm Russell Reynolds to find a new chief executive. In the interim, Mary MacLaren, the club’s chief of staff from May 2009 to July 2010, will serve as interim CEO.

GM clarifies chairman’s comments about IPO

General Motors is clarifying comments made earlier this week by Chairman Ed Whitacre about the automaker’s expected initial public offering.

Whitacre told reporters in San Antonio on Wednesday that GM’s IPO would take place sometime in November and shares would be priced from $20 to $25 per share. Get the full story »

Credit card default rates mostly fell in September, but improvements in late payments slowed for most of the major card issuers. The e-mail, the latest in a weekly series of free-form observations and exhortations Abrams sent to all Tribune Co. employees in hopes of inspiring them to reconsider print and broadcast conventions, included links to video newscast parodies. Countrywide’s Mozilo settles suit for $67.5 million

Angelo R. Mozilo, who presided over the spectacular rise and devastating fall of Countrywide Financial Corp., struck a deal Friday to avoid going to trial next week on accusations of investor fraud and insider trading. Mozilo agree to pay $22.5 million in fines to the SEC and to turn over $45 million in ill-gotten gains to former shareholders who have sued him.

Murdoch: Political donations made in ‘best interest’ of his company

News Corp. shareholders on Friday quizzed Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch and his fellow directors over the process by which the company makes donations to political organizations.

The directors faced several questions at the company’s annual general meeting from individual shareholders and shareholder activists about a recent decision to donate $1 million each to the Republican Governors Association and U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The gifts are being made in the run-up to U.S. congressional mid-term elections on Nov 2.

Southwest to attack rivals’ flight-change fees

Southwest Airlines is giving its “bag cops” a break.

Southwest has been running a heavy dose of TV commercials boasting that unlike most other airlines it lets passengers check two bags for free.

But the airline said Friday it will launch a new TV commercial designed to boost sales on its Web site. The ad, featuring singing and dancing employees in Chicago, is important to Southwest because its flights don’t appear on online booking websites such as Orbitz and Travelocity. Get the full story »
