Airbus ready to upgrade A320, may say on Weds.

Airbus has virtually finalized a decision to upgrade its best-selling A320 passenger jet with new engines and the $1-2 billion project could be announced as early as Wednesday, two sources familiar with the matter said.

Caterpillar plans to shift parts sourcing to China

Caterpillar Inc. plans to move “as much as possible” of the sourcing for its most complex parts from Japan to China, the Financial Times reported Monday on its website.

The company imports 40% of components for its excavator factories from Japan, according to the FT. However, it plans to cut that by at least a quarter within five years as it prepares for a bigger shift. Get the full story »

Midwest manufacturing output rises in October

Sources: Airbus, Boeing mull further output hikes

Airbus and Boeing have begun sounding out suppliers on their ability to cope with further production increases of their most popular jets, taking combined output well above 80 a month within four to five years.

Three senior industry sources told Reuters consultations had started on a historic upswing which could see Airbus producing as many as 44 A320 single-aisle planes by 2014 or 2015 and its rival simultaneously rising to as many as 42 737s a month. Get the full story »

Boeing to buy aircraft parts supplier

Boeing Co. said Monday that it will buy Summit Aeronautics Group, which makes titanium and other hard metal structures for commercial and military aircraft.

Boeing 787 delays give edge to rival Airbus

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co.’s delays in readying its new 787 Dreamliner jumbo jet for delivery have been giving competitors an advantage, an executive for rival Airbus said Thursday.

“It’s true that all the delays with the 787 have helped us,” Airbus Senior Vice President for Latin America Rafael Alonso told reporters on the sidelines of an airline forum, noting the Airbus A330 as the main beneficiary. “In the case of the 787, we think their problems aren’t resolved yet, we don’t know how it’s going to continue developing.” Get the full story »

3Q profit better than expected for Dell, sales weaker

Dell Inc. reported better-than-expected profit and margins and raised its yearly outlook for operating income growth, but sales came in below Wall Street’s forecast despite solid demand from large corporations.

The personal computer maker reported net earnings for the third quarter ended Oct. 29 of $822 million, or 42 cents a share, up from $337 million, or 17 cents a share, a year earlier. Get the full story »

U.S. factory, job data show some economic strength

New U.S. claims for jobless benefits barely rose last week and manufacturing activity in the country’s Mid-Atlantic region touched a near one-year high in November, more proof the economy was regaining momentum.

The improving economic picture also was enhanced by another report on Thursday showing a gauge of future activity increased 0.5 percent in October.

However, the data are not robust enough to deter the Federal Reserve from fully implementing its much criticized program to purchase $600 billion worth of government debt to push already low interest rates down to stimulate the economy. Get the full story »

Air France negotiating with Boeing about aircraft

Franco-Dutch airline Air France-KLM said Wednesday it expects to place an order for about 100 new wide-bodied aircraft soon as it anticipates its capacity needs for the middle of this decade and beyond.

The airline is in negotiations with Boeing Co. and its European rival Airbus, and the talks should be completed in the coming weeks or months, Chief Financial Officer Philippe Calavia said on the sidelines of a press conference.

Boeing: Still no timetable for more 787 flights

Boeing Co. said Tuesday that it is still investigating last week’s electrical fire that forced an emergency landing of one of its 787 Dreamliner test planes and it has not yet decided when flight tests will resume.

The aviation industry is awaiting word on whether the fire will trigger another delay for first delivery of the light-weight, carbon-composite Dreamliner, which is still in development and nearly three years behind schedule.

Boeing has not updated its target for first delivery to Japan’s All Nippon Airways Co Ltd , which is planned for the middle of the first quarter of 2011. Get the full story »

Rolls-Royce to swap out, repair leaky A380 engines

Rolls-Royce will temporarily replace engines that have oil leaks on the world’s largest jetliner after one motor disintegrated midair, an aviation regulator told The Associated Press on Monday.

The official said the British engine-maker would take off faulty engines and replace them with new ones. It will then fix the leaking part and swap the engine back again. Get the full story »
