Mayor Richard Daley Tuesday applauded Wal-Mart’s offer to pay workers at Chicago stores at least $8.75 an hour, saying the retailer is showing it is willing to go beyond what it pays elsewhere in order to bring much-needed jobs and healthy food options into the city.
The pro-Wal-Mart stance by Daley comes ahead of Thursday’s key City Council Zoning Committee vote on whether to allow the giant retailer to open a second store within city limits following years of stalled expansion efforts. The $8.75 an hour figure is 50 cents more than minimum wage but 50 cents less than labor unions are seeking.

The newly elected president of the United Auto Workers Friday said the union was “headed for a big fight” with truck maker Navistar International Corp over the terms of a new labor contract.
“We will get behind workers in the fight coming up with Navistar,” UAW President Bob King said in his keynote speech to about 1,100 delegates at a union convention in Detroit.

elected Bob King as president, to lead the union into contract talks in
2011 expected to center on Ford Motor Co and on calls to win back
concessions made during the U.S. auto industry’s recent crisis.
King, 63, succeeds Ron Gettelfinger, who served eight years as
president and oversaw the union during a period of growing difficulty
for the U.S. auto industry that culminated with the bankruptcies of

Associated Press | Boeing workers in St. Louis say they could
walk out in as little as one week under a strike notice they plan to
deliver to the company on Wednesday. The workers voted down Boeing’s
last offer on Sunday. The notice says they could strike as soon as June
23.

Associated Press | Spirit Airlines says it won’t fly on Thursday,
as a pilot strike continues. Pilots walked out on Saturday in a dispute
over pay. The airline has not flown since then. Negotiators for the
pilots union and the airline are expected to meet Tuesday, though the
chances of a deal are not clear.
Spirit carries roughly 16,000
passengers per day, and many have been stranded by the flight
cancellations. Spirit says it’s offering credit for future flights, or
customers can get a refund if they call the airline.

Associated Press | Just days after a monthlong walkout ended at its California C-17 plant, Boeing Co. is facing another possible strike.
The plane maker’s machinists union in St. Louis has voted to reject a company offer that would have replaced a contract that expires Sunday. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said on its website Sunday that members voted 1548-532 to reject the offer, and voted 1619-459 to strike.

By Julie Johnsson | Pilots of Spirit Airlines are due to walk off the job at midnight if
last-ditch negotiations fail to produce an agreement with the
controversial discount carrier.
Florida-based Spirit has canceled much of its weekend flight schedule in
anticipation of a strike by its 500 pilots though talks continued
Friday. “We are contacting customers whose flights are affected,” said
Spirit spokeswoman Misty Pinson.

Hotels Corp. faced protesters dressed as money-grubbing rats and dozens
of religious leaders who compared Hyatt’s labor practices to Pharaoh’s
enslavement of the Israelites.
The Chicago-based hotel chain, which is largely controlled by the
Pritzker family, went public in November and has been under fire by
government, religious and labor leaders since August when it fired 98
Hyatt housekeepers in Boston and replaced them with cheaper, outsourced
labor.

Dow Jones Newswires | Job turnover in the U.S. economy remained
at depressed levels in April though there were signs of a slow thawing,
according to data released Tuesday by the Labor Department.
The number of people leaving their jobs was close to the lowest on
record as the number of layoffs fell to a three-year low. The number of
people quitting voluntarily ticked higher at an extremely low level.
