Black’s freedom next question with 2 convictions upheld

Conrad Black, the wealthy Canadian who was chairman of a Chicago-based newspaper empire, may be headed back to prison after two of his crimes were upheld on appeal.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago reviewed Black’s 2007 fraud conviction for a second time, after the  Supreme Court called it into question in June. In a unanimous ruling Friday, the appellate court affirmed Black’s guilty verdicts on one count of defrauding Hollinger International Inc. and obstruction of justice but vacated two of his fraud convictions. Glassroth named interim dean of NU med school

Northwestern University said Dr. Jeffrey Glassroth has been named interim dean of the Feinberg School of Medicine, effective Jan. 1.

Glassroth is president and chief executive of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, a 700-member doctor practice affiliated with Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He is also vice dean of Feinberg School of Medicine. Get the full story »

Paul Kolton, first CBOE chairman, dead at 87

New York Times | Paul Kolton, founder of the Chicago Board Options Exchange who went on to become the he first paid chairman of the American Stock Exchange, has died at age 87.

Abrams: Tribune tales ‘blown out of proportion’

Business Insider | Lee Abrams tells online video studio My Damn Channel that the stories of the “frat boy” atmosphere at Tribune Co., which ultimately cost him his job as chief innovation officer at the media giant, were “blown out of proportion.”

Ty Fahner named president of Commercial Club

Tyrone Fahner, a partner at the Chicago law firm of Mayer Brown, will become the president of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Tribune has learned.

Fahner succeeds R. Eden Martin, also a lawyer, who has been president of the influential organization since 1999. Fahner will take over Jan. 1, W. James Farrell, chairman of the club, confirmed Thursday. Get the full story »

General Growth Properties Inc. named Sandeep Mathrani, Vornado Realty Trust’s  former president of its retail unit, to become the No. 2 U.S. mall owner’s new chief executive after it emerges from bankruptcy next month, the company said on Thursday. Get the full story »

ADM realigns senior leadership, names new CFO

U.S. agricultural processor Archer Daniels Midland Co. announced on Thursday it would realign its senior leadership as part of its long term growth strategy.

Ray Young was named the company’s new chief financial officer, effective Dec. 1, joining ADM from General Motors, where he was vice president of international operation in Shanghai, China, the company said in a statement. Get the full story »

Mesirow’s Tyree to begin chemotherapy next week

James Tyree, the Mesirow Financial chief executive who last week disclosed that he has stomach cancer, will begin chemotherapy next week.

“I feel pretty good,” he told the Tribune Wednesday night. “I’m sitting here stronger and greater than ever, and it’s stunning that these things are inside me”

In a note to Mesirow workers on Thursday, Tyree said that, over the past week, he has completed additional tests and consulted with several more doctors. Get the full story »

Sara Lee declares dividend, mum on CEO search

At Sara Lee’s annual meeting Thursday morning, the Downers Grove-based company offered no update on its search for a chief executive and declined to comment on the possible sale of its bread business.

The company did declare a regular quarterly dividend of $0.115 per share, up 4.5 percent, bringing the annual dividend to 46 cents. Get the full story »

Hospira board has ’short list’ for new CEO

Hospira Inc. chief executive officer Christopher Begley said this morning that the company’s board will be interviewing candidates to succeed him in the next two months from a newly-created “short list.”

Todd Ricketts on ‘Undercover Boss’ Nov. 7

By Phil Rosenthal | Todd Ricketts apparently got himself fired from a Chicago Cubs maintenance job when he attempted to secretly work for the ballclub his family owns for the CBS show “Undercover Boss.”

CBS, which announced Monday that it plans to air the Ricketts episode Nov. 7, said he fights for the chance to redeem himself after getting canned on his second day on the job.
