Macy’s renovating Water Tower Place store

Macy’s is undertaking a multimillion-dollar renovation of its Water Tower Place store in a move to bring new life to the Magnificent Mile outpost.

The department store chain is concentrating its efforts on the first three floors, where it generates most of its business. Cosmetics, women’s accessories, shoes and intimate apparel account for 36 percent of total revenue at Macy’s Inc. nationwide, according to the company’s annual report filed this week.

The last time the eight-level, 227,000-square-foot store had a makeover was in 1996 when it was a Marshall Field’s. Get the full story »

Macy’s profits higher, raises outlook

Macy’s Inc. posted a higher-than-expected profit after sales surged during the holiday quarter, and the department store chain forecast continued gains this year.

For its new fiscal year, Macy’s expects sales at stores open at least a year to rise 3 percent. It forecast earnings of between $2.25 and $2.30 a share, which would be an increase from the just-ended year. Get the full story »

Macy’s adding 725 to expand Web sites

Macy’s Inc. expects to add about 725 new positions during the next two years as it looks to expand its Web site offerings.

Merz Apothecary moves to Palmer House

Merz Apothecary will close its store inside Macy’s on State Street at the end of the day Wednesday, and begin the week-long process of moving to the Palmer House a few blocks away.

The family-owned business, known for its homeopathic remedies and colorful bath products, plans to open at the historic hotel at 17 E. Monroe St. on Nov. 4. A grand opening is slated for Nov. 11.

The new location at the historic hotel — on the first floor near the bellhop and the Starbucks — will expose the Chicago retailer to thousands of tourists a day, said Anthony Qaiyum, owner of Merz. Get the full story »

Macy’s to test limited-edition waters in February

New York Times | London’s Kinder Aggugini will be the first designer to participate in a new program at Macy’s, which will rotate designer collections at 250 stores, including in Chicago, every two months to lure young shoppers. The collaborations begin in February.

Macy’s Gets Fast Fashion

ANY retailer on earth would just about die to create the kind of consumer craze that takes place when H & M introduces a discount designer collaboration (like the heavily touted one from Lanvin coming on Nov. 20). The high-low concept has worked well for Target, Gap and Uniqlo, but the latest store to delve into fast fashion is a bit unexpected in that it is the classically mainstream Macy’s.

Teen retailers pace Sept. gains in same-store sales

Teen apparel retailers led generally stronger-than-expected same-store sales in September, with a late start to the back-to-school season helping those chains beat Wall Street forecasts.

Macy’s hiring more holiday help

Macy’s Inc. said it plans to hire about 65,000 seasonal staff for the holiday season — a slight increase from previous years.
