Amazon to compete with Google on Android apps

Amazon.com Inc.  plans to open a software-applications store for smartphones running Google Inc.’s Android operating system, putting it in head-to-head competition with Google’s own digital-app store.

According to an Amazon document for developers viewed by The Wall Street Journal, Amazon would take a 30 percent cut of sales, with the developers keeping the rest. The document includes a stipulation that the apps can’t be offered at a lower price elsewhere. Get the full story »

Google extends ‘Street View’ to Antarctica

From PC Mag | Google on Thursday extended its Street View mapping feature to all seven continents, with the search giant planning to move into Brazil, Antarctica and Ireland.

“We often consider Street View to be the last zoom layer on the map, and a way to show you what a place looks like as if you were there in person — whether you’re checking out a coffee shop across town or planning a vacation across the globe,” Brian McClendon, Google Earth and Maps’ vice president of engineering, wrote in a blog post.

Google adds Latin translations

Google has added Latin to its automatic translation service, the 58th language supported by Google Translate and the first dead language in its repertoire, it said on Thursday.

“We are excited to announce our first translation system for a language with no native speakers at all,” the Web search and advertising company said in a statement. Get the full story »

Facebook, Skype may link services

Social network giant Facebook Inc. and Internet telephone leader Skype SA are in talks to mesh their communications services more closely together, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday.

Under the partnership, expected to be announced within the next few weeks, Facebook users will be able to sign into Skype through their Facebook Connect accounts. Those users will be able to text message, voice chat and video chat with their Facebook friends from within Skype. Get the full story »

Yahoo revamps e-mail, shows new products

Yahoo Inc., aiming to reverse the slide in time that people spend on its Web sites, previewed updates to several advertising and consumer products on Thursday, including a revamp of its e-mail service and additional features in its search engine.

At an event at Yahoo’s Sunnyvale, Calif., headquarters, Chief Product Officer Blake Irving laid out a three-year vision for Yahoo as an “innovative technology company with the largest digital media content and communications business in the world.” Get the full story »

Report puts Android at No. 2 this year

Google Inc.’s Android software will become the world’s second most popular operating system for cell phones this year, leapfrogging offerings from Microsoft Corp., Research in Motion and Apple Inc., according to a new report.

By 2014 Android will account for nearly 30 percent of all cell-phone operating system sales, according to research firm Gartner, putting it in position to challenge Nokia Corp.’s Symbian,  the top mobile operating system for years. Get the full story »

Apple eases app restrictions; Adobe shares jump

Apple Inc. is easing restrictions for building iPhone and iPad applications, a move that should allow for the use of third-party tools such as Adobe Systems’ Flash software and could ease the tension between the two companies.

Shares of Adobe surged over 12 percent at mid-afternoon on Nasdaq Thursday, after Apple announced the changes.

Daley panel to address needs of tech firms

Mayor Richard M. Daley said Tuesday that he has created a committee to study infrastructure needs for local technology companies and entrepreneurs.

The committee comprises 20 members, including top executives at local tech firms and representatives from area universities. The group also includes local venture capitalist Matt McCall of New World Ventures, Navteq Chief Executive Larry Kaplan, Kevin Willer of Google’s Chicago office, and Brad Keywell and Eric Lefkofsky, co-founders of Lightbank, a Chicago-based investment fund focusing on early-stage tech companies.
