DirecTV plans premium video-on-demand

DirecTV is in advanced talks to be Hollywood’s first partner for early video-on-demand, a plan that is putting it in the cross hairs of the nation’s top theater chains.

People familiar with the matter said the satellite TV company would likely be the first distributor to launch so-called premium VOD, through which consumers would pay about $30 to rent a movie via the Internet or cable 60 days after it opened in theaters and at least a month before it would become available on DVD.

Comcast SportsNet picks up ‘The Dan Patrick Show’

Comcast SportsNet Chicago said Monday it is picking up DirecTV’s newly syndicated video simulcast of Fox Sports Radio’s “The Dan Patrick Show.” Patrick’s show will run live, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. weekdays, beginning Oct. 25.

Time Warner moves ahead on premium on-demand

Time Warner Inc. could offer premium video-on-demand as early as the first quarter for $20 to $30 per movie in a trial, the company’s CFO said Thursday.

Time Warner is considering making movies available for rent on pay television services shortly after their theatrical release and before their DVD release, Chief Financial Officer John Martin said at a Goldman Sachs investor conference in New York. Get the full story »

Google in deal to sell ads on DirecTV channels

Satellite television provider DirecTV Inc. said Wednesday it has signed up Google Inc. to sell commercial time on some of the channels it carries.
