Dell Inc. reported better-than-expected profit and margins and raised its yearly outlook for operating income growth, but sales came in below Wall Street’s forecast despite solid demand from large corporations.

Dell Inc. is planning to submit a more competitive bid for data storage firm 3Par Inc., challenging Hewlett-Packard Co.’s offer of $24 per share, a source familiar with the talks said Wednesday.

Dell Inc. put its first U.S. smartphone on sale on Tuesday, making the computer maker the latest technology manufacturer to enter the competitive mobile handset market.
The Round Rock, Texas-based company said its 3.5-inch touchscreen phone, dubbed the Aero, runs on Google Inc.’s Android operating system and is available for $99.99 with a new two-year contract from AT&T Inc. and $299.99 without. It can be ordered on Dell’s Web site. Get the full story »

Dell Inc. will begin selling its new tablet device called the Dell Streak to U.S. customers this week for $299.99 with a two-year AT&T Inc. contract, and for $549.99 without, it said Tuesday.
Dell said it would begin taking orders online Thursday.
The company is hoping the five-inch tablet, which runs on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, will help it take on Apple Inc.’s iPad.

The Chicago-based company Threadless, which has been putting artists’ designs on T-shirts for a decade, now is giving consumers something for their fingertips and something else for their feet.
Threadless announced on Thursday that it had partnered with Dell to offer 11 of its designs on the lids of Dell Mini or Dell Studio laptop PCs. And on Monday, it will announce a separate venture to offer six of its designs, including two new ones, on high-end Havaianas flip flops.
The partnerships highlight moves to extend the Threadless brand and the artistic expressions of its 80,000+ artists beyond the well-known T-shirts. Company executives also have had discussions about putting designs on water towers, beverage containers and integrating them into video games. Get the full story »
