Personalized TV ads coming to your living room

Data-gathering firms and technology companies are aggressively matching people’s TV-viewing behavior with other personal data — in some cases, prescription-drug records obtained from insurers — and using it to help advertisers buy ads targeted to shows watched by certain kinds of people.

Comcast earnings soar; now hard part begins

Comcast surpassed analysts’ estimates for its earnings in the final quarter of 2010 — its final period before adding NBC Universal to its mix. The company’s operating income grew rose 10.8 percent for the quarter. Revenue was up 7.2 percent to $9.72 billion.

Now the work begins. Despite all of the talk about the importance of fixing the ailing NBC broadcast network or the glamour of entering the movie business, Roberts said the first priority of his lieutenant, NBC Universal Chief Executive Steve Burke, would be “to maintain the strong momentum and focus of the cable channels.”

Comcast, Time Warner strike major content deal‎

Comcast Corp., the nation’s largest cable and broadband provider, has struck a wide-ranging deal with Time Warner Inc. that will give the company access to content that it can distribute across numerous platforms.

The multiyear deal means that Comcast subscribers will be able to access Time Warner-owned programming from networks that include TBS and TNT online.

Comcast wins FCC approval to take over NBC

The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday gave Comcast Corp., the country’s largest cable company, the green light to take over NBC Universal, home of the NBC television network.

Four of the commission’s five members voted to let Comcast buy a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal from General Electric Co. for $13.8 billion in cash and assets. FCC reportedly set to approve Comcast-NBC deal

Federal regulators are on the verge of announcing approval of Comcast Corp.’s  deal to acquire control of NBC Universal from General Electric Co. , according to people close to the review.

Federal Communications Commission officials spent the weekend making last-minute revisions to an order approving the deal. Comcast back online after Midwest outage

An Internet service outage affecting Comcast customers in the Chicago area, northwest Indiana, southwest Michigan and Minnesota came to an end early Monday morning. The outage of high-speed Internet started at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and ended at 12:15 a.m. Monday, said a Comcast spokeswoman. California Dish fight could affect Blackhawks fans

Chicago sports fans who subscribe to Dish Network better keep an eye on a West Coast carriage dispute in which Dish customers have not had Comcast SportsNet California since Nov. 24.

Potentially at stake is the access of roughly 360,000 Chicago-area homes — about 10 percent of the market — to Blackhawks hockey, Bulls basketball and Cubs and White Sox baseball.

FCC to take up net neutrality at December meeting

U.S. telecommunications regulators plan to tackle at a Dec. 21 meeting contentious Internet traffic rules intended to prohibit broadband providers from blocking or slowing some traffic.

The latest skirmish is a fracas between Comcast, which connects users to the Internet, and Level 3, which signed a deal three weeks ago to host and deliver Netflix’s streaming videos to networks like Comcast’s. Comcast ultimately delivers those videos to its paying broadband customers.

Franken asks Justice to look at Comcast/NBC deal

Sen. Al Franken, a critic of Comcast Corp.’s proposed deal for control of NBC Universal, asked the Justice Department Monday to investigate whether the giant cable company had engaged in “illegal collaboration” concerning its intended target.

Franken (D-Minn.) said that on Sept. 26 Comcast had named its chief operating officer, Steve Burke, as the prospective chief executive of NBC Universal. Last week, Comcast named several executives who would hold top jobs at NBC Universal after the cable company took control of the broadcaster and movie studio from General Electric Co.
