The state of Illinois might be notorious for its financial troubles, but at least it barely cracked the Top 10 of states with the most bank robberies in 2010, according to newly released statistics from the FBI.
Crooks committed 805 bank robberies in California in 2010, with Texas second at 464. Those are the two most populous states, with 37 million and 24.8 million residents respectively, in July 2009, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Web site.
They were followed by: Pennsylvania (No. 6 in population, at 12.9 million), with 292 bank robberies; Ohio (No. 7 in population), 263; Florida (No. 4 in population), 243; Arizona (No. 13 in population), 238; New York (No. 3 in population, with 19.5 million), 219; and, then, Illinois (No. 5 in population), with 203. In 2009, Illinois, with population of 12.9 million, saw 231 bank robberies.
Nationally, bank robbers ran off with $43 million in loot in 5,546 incidents in 2010, of which $8.1 million was recovered. That’s down from $46 million taken in 5,943 bank robberies the prior year, when $8 million was recovered.
The FBI also found that Friday is the most common day for bank robberies, followed by Tuesday.
The most common modus operandi used by robbers was, first, a note demanding money, followed by an oral demand. By far, most robberies take place at the counter.

So states with lots of people, and lots of banks, tend to have the most bank robberies.

Na i think these guys were robbing banks to pay off the new income tax hike by governor Quinn. Move to Indianapolis get away from this political mess and enjoy our 50% cheaper taxes and 35% lower cost of living. Houses are 30-40% cheaper in Indy than national average and the value of them is going up.

Bank Robbers are cowards. The absolute small amount of money they may recieve following a robbery does not compensate the lengthy federal prison time they will get.
Jim, you must be a real estate agent in Indianapolis…and taxes aren’t ‘50% cheaper’. You forgot to mention municipal income tax, too.
If low cost of living is all that matters, move to Alabama or Arkansas.

Zach heres Indianas tax rates. 7% sales which isn’t changed by local government. 1% capped property taxes (lowest in the nation) and 3.4% flat rate income tax. Most of your everyday items aren’t part of sales tax. Gasoline Taxes are about 30 cents cheaper per gallon in Indiana compared to Chicago.
