There will be no seventh annual Chicago Luxury Home Tour this fall.
Greenspring Media Group, the Midwest Home magazine offshoot that organized the annual event, is mothballing the tour for a year because it couldn’t secure enough high-end new homes to make it worth consumers’ while.
“When new homes of this caliber are built, they’re built a year in advance, three-quarters of a year in advance,” said Tom Gavaras, director of operations and marketing for Minneapolis-based Greenspring. “It’s a little bit of a tougher time and not as many builders are building homes of this type. We just couldn’t assemble enough homes.”
In the past, participation in the home tour costs builders near $10,000. Last year, 17 luxury homes were on the tour, with homes that stretched from Oswego to Northfield and valued at less than $1 million to $8 million. In previous years, as many as 30 homes participated.
Gavaras said several builders have told him they hoped to participate in a 2011 tour.
Greenspring also canceled, for the second consecutive year, its luxury home tour in the Naples, Fla., market. A home tour in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market proceeded as planned.
