Toyota Motor Corp. has been subpoenaed by a U.S. federal grand jury for documents related to steering problems in its vehicles, the automaker said Tuesday. Toyota and its subsidiaries plan to cooperate with the investigation and are preparing a response, company spokesman Etienne Plas said Tuesday in an e-mailed statement.

The request for documents related to defective, broken or fractured steering relay rods was issued by a federal grand jury in New York on June 29, the spokesman said.

Models and production years of the vehicles involved were not specified.

The probe comes after the troubled automaker was subpoenaed in March for documents related to unintended acceleration of its vehicles and braking issues in the Toyota Prius.

Shares of Toyota were down about 1 percent in pre-market trading.
