For many years, a significant amount of the output of this local plant was private label apparel for Marshall Field, as well as the May Department stores.
When Macy’s took over and converted those stores, it replaced much of the Hartmarx-produced suits and clothing with those made in China. This is a prime example of how the switch from Marshall Field’s to Macy’s was much more than a name change, impacting a significant number of local workers.
