Google Voice released to public

Google Inc. said it will open its potentially disruptive Google Voice technology to the public.

The company had released an early preview of Google Voice, which consolidates existing phone numbers into an Internet-calling service, last year.

In October, the Federal Communications Commission sent an inquiry to Google about Google Voice, following complaints that Google was selectively blocking calls made over the service.

Large telecommunications companies such as AT&T Inc. have complained that Google Voice should be regulated like a traditional telecom service, while Apple Inc. hasn’t approved use of Google Voice on its iPhone device, which runs on the AT&T network.

“We’re proud of the progress we’ve made with Google Voice over the last few years, and we’re still just scratching the surface of what’s possible,” Google said in a statement.

Have been using Gvoice for over a year – one of the best telephony applications available: Voice mail to email and SMS text message; ability to block callers (this telemarketers); No longer worry about whom you give your phone number to); consolidate all you personal numbers to the Gvoice account.

I like giving out my Google number instead of my cell phone number to people or businesses. When someone calls, my caller ID will show my Google # and then I don’t answer it, I just let them leave a message. If they don’t leave one then it wasn’t important. I can then call them back through my Google number.

I already have caller id to tell me who’s calling, and I have an answering machine or voice mail to take any messages. I get my email on my computer and can get it on my cell if I choose to do that.

Does GV allow me to get rid of any of these things or is it just one more number I have to keep track of while still paying for all the rest?
