Associated Press | The average price of regular gasoline in the
United States has jumped more than 7 cents over a two-week period, to
$2.92.

Denver had the lowest average price among cities surveyed at $2.71 a
gallon for regular unleaded. Chicago was highest at $3.22. That’s
according to the national Lundberg Survey of fuel prices released
Sunday.

Analyst Trilby Lundberg says the average price for a gallon of mid-grade was $3.05. Premium was at $3.16.

The average for diesel nationwide was $3.15, up about 7 cents from two weeks ago.

Not the highest — here in our mountain village in NM our price for regular is at $3.09.

That’s because the BP racketeers keep on blowing up their facilities in order to jack up the price.

Remember to be very thankful you’re not in the tax-draining lands of Europe. In Germany, today’s price for regular (per liter) is 1.47 EUR which translates to $7.12 per gallon! And that’s down from about $8.30 a gallon a few months ago, just because of the USD – EURO conversion rates.

I get tired of hearing that same old half argument. Say only the part you want to.
Lets see gas is high in Europe, Dare I ask why?
A rail system 2nd to none, Hwys that you can actually drive on. Very fuel efficient cars.

I was in Indianapolis Indiana last weekend, May 1 & 2, 2010 where I filled up at a BP gas station for $2.78/gal on Saturday, Coming home on Sunday the Gas averaged $3.19/gal. This is a $0.41 difference. I don’t care what people want to blame it on – summer reformulation or higher taxes on gas it is still about greed and what someone can get away with.

What kind of a stupid “news” story is this?
TELL US WHY. Investigate! Use your journalism degrees for something! Is it taxes? Is it gouging and/or collusion? Is it higher operating costs?
This story as it stands is beyond useless. 6 sentences, 1 fact. LAME.

Anchorage, Alaska has you beat. We are currently at $3.34 for unleaded and more for diesel. Prices just came down … they had been $3.39 for the last few weeks.
I know that some people forget that Alaska is part of the U.S.

Lakebluffer, what kind of math did you use? Since when is $3.09 HIGHER than $3.19 per gallon? Or has all that thin air up there in your village killed off too many brain cells?
Vivian, Alaska doesn’t count. Never did, and now that we see what kind of women you elect as your governor, it never will. Sorry.
Let’s here it for Chicago!! We’re best at SOMETHING!!

It’s because of our taxes. That is why the gas is cheaper in the Chicago suburbs than it is in the city. That is the story the Tribune should write – do we have the highest gas tax?

Taxes, plural, is correct as to Chicago’s and Illinois’ high gasoline prices. Illinois is one of the few states where every level of government is allowed to pile on taxes to the gasoline you buy. In most states only the state is allowed to levy a tax on gasoline. But, here in Illinois after the state levies theirs, the county gets a whack and then your local city or town gets to take a bite of the apple as well. Not only that, but the state tax is a sales tax, as opposed to the federal tax which is a set cents per gallon levy, so the higher the price of gas the higher the Illinois state gas tax goes.

Your blog keeps getting better and better! I’ve been following your posts for a while now and I have to say that your older articles don’t offer as much insight as the newer articles. Your writing is constantly improving! By the way, if you’re looking into placing some advertisements on your blog – you should really do it.
