Dow Jones Newswires | There were 21 percent more Americans with
smartphones in the three months ended February than the prior quarter,
according to new findings from researcher comScore Inc.
The company also said Motorola Inc. continues to have more U.S.
subscribers using its handsets than any other company. That is one bit
of good news for the company, in what has been several years of
struggling sales amid a dearth of hot products.
ComScore said 22.3 percent of the 234 million Americans ages 13 and up who are mobile subscribers used a Motorola phone, down 1.9 percentage points from the three-month period ended in November.
LG Electronics Inc. remained No. 2, with its share flat at 21.7 percent, while Samsung Electronics Co. edged up to 21.4 percent from 21 percent.
BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) saw the highest growth among the top five, with its share up to 8.2 percent from 6.5 percent. The company also saw its share of the 45.4-million-person U.S. smartphone business rise to 42.1 percent of subscribers in the three months ended February from 40.8 percent in the prior three-month period. Apple Inc. (AAPL) slipped to 25.4 percent from 25.5 percent.
Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Andriod platform continued to see sharp gains among smartphones, rising to 9 percent from 3.8 percent. Those gains seem to have come at the expense of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), which posted a 4-percentage-point drop to 15.1 percent.
