Quinn: Illinois won’t oppose health care reform

Posted March 22, 2010 at 1:51 p.m.

Associated Press | Gov. Pat Quinn says Illinois won’t try to
block the health care reform that Congress has passed.

Quinn on Monday said Illinois embraces the reforms, unlike other states.

Virginia has announced a legal challenge. And a new Virginia law says its residents can’t be forced by the government to have insurance.

Idaho’s governor also has signed a measure requiring that state’s attorney general to sue the federal government over mandates that require people to have coverage.

Quinn, however, says he doesn’t think opponents will win in court.

The reforms would expand Medicaid. Quinn says he doesn’t think adding participants to the Medicaid rolls would add to Illinois’ deficit. But he says cost estimates haven’t been done yet.

No wonder the State is going bankrupt. Quinn lives in a world where increased demand with the same supply don’t increase prices. The only way to do that is to ration. Unless he’s proposing to rewrite the laws of economics. Next step – rationing. So how will we do it? Which Animals will be more equal than others?

Really, and why is that, Mr. Quinn? He should have ended his sentence at the word think.

    Mr. Quinn,
The medicaid payments to doctors are 9 months in arrears now. The new bill would add approximately 330,000 people to the Illinois medicaid rolls. The Federal Government is only going to pay for 50% of their costs. Where are you going to come up with the millions of dollars in cost, per year, for the increased participants. Will you find a Leprechaun with a pot of gold? Or maybe you can buy some Mega Million or Powerball tickets and if you win donate it to the state.
OR MAYBE YOU’LL JUST STICK IT TO THE WORKING TAXPAYERS OF ILLINOIS

Kaiser data for 2007–2008 shows that Illinois has 812,100 people below 133% of the federal poverty level. Average Medicaid spending per person for 2007 (most recent year available) was $4129. This would suggest that the cost to cover those 812,100 people would be in the neighborhood of $3,353,160,900. The legislation provides supports to states for the first two years. After than the state is paying. If the traditional 50/50 split applies, then Illinois needs to locate a minimum of $1.7 billion dollars of additional funding per year (plus inflation). When one is substantially in debt to begin with, what’s another $2 billion a year (or so)?

Who cares what Quinn won’t do? The question is what will Governor Brady do?
