By Wailin Wong | Motorola Inc. said Dan Moloney, the president of its cable TV set-top box business, is leaving the company to be the chief executive for an electrical components manufacturer in Philadelphia.
Moloney was president of Motorola’s Home and Networks business, which comprised both set-top boxes and wireless network infrastructure. Earlier this month, the company restructured its business units ahead of a planned separation and moved the Home unit to reside with the mobile-phone division. As a result, Moloney became president of just the Home business.
The executive is joining Technitrol Inc. as CEO, replacing the retiring chief, James Papada III. Technitrol said Monday that Moloney is expected to come on board at the end of March.
Moloney came to Motorola from General Instruments, a maker of set-top boxes that Motorola acquired in 2000. Moloney had been working at General Instruments since 1983.
“I have greatly appreciated my time at Motorola and the opportunity to work with such a talented team,” Moloney said in Motorola’s statement.
Co-Chief Executive Sanjay Jha, who oversees the mobile devices and home business, will lead the home business effectively immediately. Co-chief Executive Greg Brown leads the unit comprising networks and enterprise mobility, which makes communications equipment for government and business clients.
Maybe the new guy can get better quality out of these boxes.
Problems with HDMI connections and audio signal are prevalent on my setup.
Does the box from AT&T have these problems?
I can’t believe someone else hired this guy. The General Instruments/Motorola set-top boxes and DVRs are some of the worst pieces of technology ever mass produced. Ever see the remote control? Looks like it was designed by a blind, mentally challenged chimpanzee. Good news for Motorola. This guy is a loser. Stock should improve.
It’s hard to imagine how many people forget this commonsense stuff. Thanks for sharing. BTW – this would make a great tweet, do you use Twitter?
